twitter

Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be blogging from my travels this spring break. I am going to Disneyland, Las Vegas and New Orleans (for the AMA Conference). I will post anything that I find of interest to marketing, advertising or just plain interesting. Keep posted here and you can follow me on twitter.

What does the future hold?

Hey fellow marketers,

You may be asking yourself, "How can I become a successful businessperson and not end up like MC Hammer?" Well, I don't have all the answers and my previous statement may be under speculation as I will mention in a moment, but I do have some tokens of advice.
As six other exec board members and I venture to New Orleans, LA for the AMA International Collegiate Conference, we will mingle with over 1000 fellow students and hundreds of faculty and professionals. The first piece of advice that will lead you to success will be taking place all over this conference. Networking, you've heard it before and you'll hear it again, you are only as strong as your network. I could write at least 10 more posts about specific times when networking has helped me in a situation but I won't digress. At this conference, UO AMA execs are going to bump shoulders with potential co-workers, bosses, friends and possibly interviewers. One of my main goals going to this conference will be to network, network and network.

The second key to success will tie back in MC Hammer, as many know, MC Hammer filed for bankruptcy and pretty much fell off the entertainment scene. He went back to the drawing board (returned to his faith and began preaching) and followed his heart. He also did what most entrepreneurs do when starting successful businesses, he found out a way to share his hobby. MC Hammer loves to dance and he became the co-founder of a web site that hosts dancing videos (www.dancejam.com). The second key to success while doing something you love is to be very aware of your surroundings (social media right now, for example) and leverage your network to make a substantial impact. Dance Jam has the potential to be very big and I am excited to hear more successful news about MC Hammer.

To quote the AMAers from Hofstra University that I met at last year's conference, "It's HAMA Time!"

Hope everyone has a great spring break (do a little networking this break and it could go a long way).

Allen Hall Advertising's NVC Elevator Pitch

How do you transmit the idea of a 30 second elevator pitch if you are a student-run advertising agency? How about build a 7 foot tall 6 foot wide and 3 foot deep mock elevator cab, brand it with the client's message and place it in the middle of the business school. Don't forget the camera so that you can record the "amazing" ideas that students have stored in their minds.

Main Event 2008: Recap

The UOAMA's annual networking event took place last Wednesday (February 20th). The event had eight marketing professionals from various companies (such as Funk/Levis, The Duck Store, and more). Approximately 30 UOAMA members came out to network, eat some food and enjoy the ambiance. Professionals were given a resume packet and encouraged to share stories, experiences and advice. This year we had a dj spinning live music and the theme was monopoly. I have been a member of the UOAMA since my freshman year and this was the fourth Main Event that I have attended. It was very rewarding for my final Main Event to be such a great success. I hope next years is even better! Check out the pictures below to see some of the event.
