You may be asking yourself, "How can I become a successful businessperson and not end up like MC Hammer?" Well, I don't have all the answers and my previous statement may be under speculation as I will mention in a moment, but I do have some tokens of advice.
As six other exec board members and I venture to New Orleans, LA for the AMA International Collegiate Conference, we will mingle with over 1000 fellow students and hundreds of faculty and professionals. The first piece of advice that will lead you to success will be taking place all over this conference. Networking, you've heard it before and you'll hear it again, you are only as strong as your network. I could write at least 10 more posts about specific times when networking has helped me in a situation but I won't digress. At this conference, UO AMA execs are going to bump shoulders with potential co-workers, bosses, friends and possibly interviewers. One of my main goals going to this conference will be to network, network and network.
The second key to success will tie back in MC Hammer, as many know, MC Hammer filed for bankruptcy and pretty much fell off the entertainment scene. He went back to the drawing board (returned to his faith and began preaching) and followed his heart. He also did what most entrepreneurs do when starting successful businesses, he found out a way to share his hobby. MC Hammer loves to dance and he became the co-founder of a web site that hosts dancing videos (www.dancejam.com). The second key to success while doing something you love is to be very aware of your surroundings (social media right now, for example) and leverage your network to make a substantial impact. Dance Jam has the potential to be very big and I am excited to hear more successful news about MC Hammer.
To quote the AMAers from Hofstra University that I met at last year's conference, "It's HAMA Time!"
Hope everyone has a great spring break (do a little networking this break and it could go a long way).
